Abstract Exressionism is a Mid 20th century movement comprising of diverse styles and techniques to express and artist's liberty to convey attitudes and emotions through non-traditional and usually non-represenational works. There are many types of Abstract art, ie Expressionism (Pollock and deKooning), Post painterly Abstraction (Helen Frankenthaler)Lyrical,(Jean Dubuffet,) Color field painting,(Frank Stella and Mondrian)Cubism,(Picasso and Braque)Futurism(Kandinsky) andFauVism(Raoul Dufy and Matisse).
The origins of Abstract art comes from the Impressionist movement of the 19th century and in artists like Monet and Cezanne who painted in a manner that relied more on how the individual interprets the world, rather than depicting in absolute realism. It is an interprtation of an artist's own experiences and their own internal selves. The significance of abstract art lies not just in it's Importance to all modern art but in the "Art Experience". Before this movment, art was focused on realism and visual pleasure but now, abstract art is not only about "seeing" but also "feeling".
