Romaine Kaufman was born in South Africa. The very beginning of her creativity came as a child of four years old. Romaine loved to draw, color with crayons and colored pencils and was inspired to paint with watercolors. Romaine lived her formative years in Australia. There she entered the Conservatorium of Music in Sydney (Sister school to the Julliard School in New York) where she was being trained as a concert pianist. The real inspiration came in the direction of painting and focused on the great artists and their passion to paint. Romaine studied painting at the West Australian Institute of Technology, now Curtin University  in Perth, Western Australia and had her first solo art show at eighteen years old. Her drawings and paintings were exhibited in one of Western Australia's most prominent Galleries. The  Lord Mayor of Perth, Sir Thomas Wardle opened one of her the exhibitions and bought a painting titled "Yellow Flowers" for his Chambers at Perth's Council House. After the Show, Romaine came to a crossroads in her life and with careful deliberation decided to pursue painting over music performance.
Romaine came to the United States after college to enter the French Fashion Academy in New York. Romaine traveled for ten weeks throughout five Asian  countries studying  textile  design to enhance her knowledge originally for a career in Fashion Design.
Romaine has taken on Abstract Expressionism to bring an understanding of a visual communication with an internal human element of the emotional energy of nature. These works are in touch with the world globally but incorporate an influence of the spiritual symbolism  and culture of Australia's Indigenous peoples. The renowned art of the Australian Aborigines inspired and influenced her paintings to where she is now.
The "Walkabout" series of 10 paintings are exhibited in this Show.

Romaine works with oils, acrylics and other mixed media to integrate the textures and line symbols used to create an aesthetic balance of land and water. Romaine has soloed many times in a Cessna 150 plane to understand aerial views of the landforms and incorporate her knowledge in her paintings.
Romaine has shown her paintings in Australia, Texas, West Virginia, Maryland and Florida.

Romaine has degrees in Graphic Design, (Aust.) Classical Piano and Theory (Aust.) and a Gerontology degree from West Virginia University. She also enjoys photography, traveling, playing the piano, tennis, swimming and gourmet cooking.

I'm often curious about how painters of abstraction evolve over the years, particularly if they started out with representational work as i did. Where do you work...where is your studio?

One has to learn the fundamentals of painting and drawing first just as one has to learn the basics of playing the piano before one steps into a different plateau of a higher level. I work out of a design studio shared with other artists in the city where I reside. One has the freedom to create when the basics have been mastered.
Love your work..
